Asset Management in China: events in London and New York

16 June 2010

The firm held two seminars during the week of July 5th, one in our London office and one in New York, on recent developments for asset management in China.

The asset management business in China has been undergoing incredible development and growth over the past few years, and has become a focal point for many of our investment fund clients.  The seminar covered a wide range of topics, including the depth of opportunity in China's market, an outline of the recent regulatory changes that have allowed onshore funds in China, as well as a detailed discussion of various structures for onshore and offshore capital raising and deployment capability.  The latter portion of the program focused on traditional offshore structures for raising capital for investment into China, recently developed onshore structures for raising RMB funds for investment both within and outside of China, and potential parallel structures for combining inbound and outbound flows of capital in one fund platform.

The seminars were spearheaded by Mitch Silk and Ji Zou, demonstrating the cooperation between our US China Group and our offices in China.  In London, Matt Huggett, a partner in the Investment Funds Group participated in the seminar, and in New York we were fortunate enough to have two clients add their market knowledge to our panel: Steve Greenspan, Global Head of Product Development for JPMorgan Asset Management; and Armstrong Chen, a Senior Counsel at the China Banking Regulatory Commission.  Gary Lazarus also participated in both events.

The seminars were well attended and well received by our clients.  In New York, we had over one hundred attendees, well in excess of our expectations.  Future events are being planned to reach clients and potential clients in other regions, as well as follow-up meetings in New York, London and Asia with those interested in these products and developments.
